This generous program of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the ABC, provides a forum for regional youth to share their stories. Beginning in 1998,Heywire partners with the federal government to deliver opportunities through the story competition, innovation grants, a youth summit and broadcasting via regional radio. To date, more than 9,000 young people aged between 16 and 22 years have become involved.
Heywire is a particularly useful resource for Stage 6 students studying the English Studies course, especially regarding the Achieving through English Module: English and the Worlds of Education, Careers and Community. Schools in metropolitan areas may not be eligible to enter, although the uploaded stories make compelling viewing. With more than forty categories, several are highly relevant to this module and the Teachers page answers several frequently asked questions. The teaching notes guide students through analysis and response writing. An informative website and fantastic opportunity!
