In a post from October, 2013, I wrote about Nam Le’s powerful book of short stories and have since studied these with Advanced and Extensions students. Le’s compelling writing became an effective counterpoint to the more humorous tone of The Happiest Refugee, a memoir written by widely recognised comedian Ahn Do. Our school began our successful school wide program ‘Kick off with Reading’ in 2014 with every student and teacher receiving The Happiest Refugee.
Both the SBS interview with the creator, and the graphic novel itself, are exciting texts to explore in the classroom.
