My current Standard Preliminary unit is a study of Bruce Dawe’s poetry titled ‘The Poet’s Voice’. We are exploring related material that provides insights into everyday life, such as the music video for Alex Lloyd’s Brand New Day.
Close up reveals a brand name – links to notion of commercialised world
performative and narrative style – omniscient narrator?
life as drudge, duty and obligation – no sense of joy or anticipation
persona foregrounded – world weary? serious faces on fellow travellers
dull and drab colours – sense of sameness
shifting tone heralds carefree nature: abandoning of responsibility allowing people to connect
persona hovers in the doorway as smile appears – indecision?
removal of tie symbolises decision to make own choices – compare with earlier shot in text: identify the emotion and explain how an audience might be positioned
how does the mood in the bus change? why?
note passage of time – links to life cycle?
intimacy shown through proximity of persona and woman on bus
Work in progress – check back soon
list the discoveries made by the persona on his journey – I’m thinking this will work well with Motor Cycle Diaries in the Area of Study, too
