My last post gave some ideas for encouraging students to write by vieiwng a short action sequence from a film. I tried something similar with students from the Preliminary, or Year 11, Course. As an introduction to studying different aspects of a particular concept that is required in the NSW HSC, Journey has become a popular option.
Many students do not enjoy reading, and so traditional methods of appreciating novels or extracts as a way of identifying effective writing may no longer work.
Read my first draft based on a sequence from the fantastic movie The Blues Brothers on my Creative Writing page. These scenes were chosen as they contain the necessary ingredients for a short story or narrative: single focus, few characters, a complication.
